Kakum National Park
afrikanischen Regenwaldes in
ihrer natürlichen Umgebung zu erleben.
Kakum National Park
The Kakum National Park protects a patch of
rainforest that ranks among the most extensive remaining pristine habitat of its
sort in the country. The Park covers an area of 607 sq. km and is classified as
moist, semi - deciduous, is high in rainfall figures especially between May and
December and has a humidity level of about 90%. The rivers which rise in this
area provide water for more than 130 towns and villages including Cape Coast.
The Kakum National Park protects about 40 large animal species and approximately
274 species of birds. The flora and fauna is so extensive that some areas have
about 200 different species on one hectare. Most trees in the Park reach a height
between 18m and 40m but there are others which are very old and reach a height
of 70m. The main attraction in the Park is the Canopy Walk way which is
the only one in Africa that high up. The Canopy Walk consists of seven separate
bridges reaching from one forest giant to another. It is an exciting experience
especially for bird watchers. There is also the possibility of hiking through
the forest for varying time ranging from 1 hour to 2 - 3 days. Platforms have
been erected at vantage points on the path through the forest to spend the
night.
